Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club recently made a donation of £450 to the newly-formed Newquay Youth Angling Club, to help them purchase equipment.

The group aims to introduce young people to the world of angling, and is growing from strength to strength with more members getting involved every week.

Lion President Lesley Clarke went to one of the group’s sessions at Gwinnear Pools, near Newquay where instructor Roy Hohlweg, and many of the young members showed her the Lions equipment being used.

Newquay Towan Blystra Lions recently helped a talented local dancer, on a trip of a lifetime to America to show off her dancing skills.

Jade Oakley was part of the group from the Big Dance Company, who were selected to dance in a competition in Las Vegas last month.

Newquay Towan Blystra Lions provided Jade with a new jacket for the event, which she will also use as part of her uniform for future dancing events as well.

Many thanks to everyone that came along to our special Leos evening, which took place at Newquay Tretherras on Wednesday night.

We had a good turnout of young people, who were interested in possibly becoming members of our new Leos club. They had the chance to chat to many of the Lions members, and discover more about the organisation and how they can get involved.

They were also given the opportunity to enter a special competition, where they suggested a project in which they could work on. These will be taken to our next full members meeting, where we will pick one that will be funded.

Newquay Towan Blystra Lions are inviting young people in the age range 14 - 21 to come along to Newquay Tretherras Academy next Tuesday evening and learn more about their new Leos club which is being established to cover the Newquay and District area.

Towan Blystra Lions are part of the worldwide network of Lions Clubs which provide service and support to local communities and beyond through fund raising and help to worthwhile groups and causes. The Leos are a branch of the club which encourages young people to get involved by developing their own projects and initiatives under the umbrella of the Lions.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for young people to develop their portfolios by becoming involved in charitable voluntary work” said Jodie Ward, the Lions Youth Officer. “Employers and universities are normally looking to see what level of social responsibility has been demonstrated by prospective employees and students. Leos is a great way to be able to show this in a well recognised and accepted international organisation.”

“There are also opportunities to gain awards through the Young Leaders in Service programme and have some fun in the process” Jodie continued.

Sarah Morcom, who is another of the Towan Blystra Lions helping to develop the Leos, said: “Ours is a young and vibrant club who are very keen to see this develop as a long-term initiative providing genuine opportunities for young people in our community. It’s totally free to join as the club with the assistance of Newquay Town Council have supported the scheme.”

Those interested along with parents and friends are invited to come along to Tretherras on Tuesday at 6.30 where Lions will be available to explain details of the Leos and discuss what opportunities exist.

Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club are looking forward to a successful 2012 of serving the community, as they welcomed yet another member to their proactive club.

Sarah Morcom became a member last week, in a ceremony held with her fellow lions. Sarah is the fourth member of the club to be in her twenties. She will now help the club in it’s regular activities in the community.

“I am delighted to be the newest member of the club, I have received a lovely welcome from the existing Towan Blystra Lions and I’m really looking forward to working with them all.

“I was inspired to join the club after seeing the hard work and commitment by the members to assist others and support the community. They do fantastic work within Newquay and the surrounding areas and I’m very lucky to be a part of that.”

Lions President Lesley Clarke was very happy to welcome Sarah as the club’s newest member: ” I was extremely happy and proud to sponsor Sarah as a Lion into our club at our last meeting.

“She takes our total membership to 28. This is a great achievement when other Lions clubs throughout the country are struggling to attract young members.”

Lesley added: “I know she will be a useful asset in the club and has already joined a sub committee to progress our work in the community.”

Easter is just around the Corner, and Newquay Towan Blystra Lions have joined forces with some of Newquay’s most popular pubs and organisations to help raise some Easter cash for local causes.

There are six locations across the resort which have been given a very large, giant easter egg. People are able to place their name against a number, and whichever number is pulled out the hat on Good Friday wins the giant egg.

It costs £1 to pick a number, and all profits will go to charity. 50% to a charity of the pub/clubs choice, and the remaining 50% towards local projects by Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club.

You can pick your number, and look at one of the six eggs at the following locations:

The Tavern

Newquay Towan Blystra Lions are roaring with pride, as they scooped a number of top awards at the recent District Convention, which took place in Torquay.

The club were joint winner of this year’s Ray Hill Administration Award, along with Exeter Lions Club.

This award has been presented to Lions Clubs in the South West District since 1997 for their achievement in administration during the year. It was an idea brought about by Past District Governor Lion Ken Clarke during his year as District Governor after the demise of the District Treasurer Past District Governor Lion Ray Hill in 1997.

All the clubs are entered and gain points for completing Membership/ Activities Reports, sending List of Current members by a certain date, payment of all dues by set dates, returning certain forms by set dates, submitting accounts by set date, attending all 4 Zone meetings and various forums and conventions.

This is the second year Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club have won this award. President Lesley said ”It was a great achievement for us as a new club to win this award again for the second year albeit jointly this year, but it shows the enthusiasm of the members in our club and the timely work achieved by our secretary Lion Colin and treasurer Lion Heather.”

The club also won the SW Lions Environmental Award, after club efforts helping Newquay in Bloom tidy up the gardens in the town centre and a beach clean on Fistral Beach.

Meanwhile, Newquay Towan Blystra Lions member Lion Jodie Ward received the “First Timers Award” from Past District Governor Brenda Wood.

This is a competition for first time Lions attending convention, to go and speak to Lions at the convention and ask for their signatures which count as points to the total. President Lesley said, “It was great to see Lion Jodie win this award at her first Convention, she is a great asset to our club as shown by her commitment, enthusiasm and dedication. She has developed superbly since becoming a member, even though being a lion for only a year and being our youngest member.”

Newquay Towan Blystra Lions are celebrating after being presented with two awards marking it’s hard work within the community.

They were presented with a Club Excellence award for 2010-2011, and a President’s Award for 2010-2011.

They were presented to Lions President Lesley Clarke by DG Clif Cane. To earn the award, the club showed an increase in numbers, attended certain events, fund raised and carried out service within the local community.

Newquay Towan Blystra Lions recently held their successful Charter Dinner, at the Sandy Lodge Hotel, Newquay.

Members of the club and invited guests enjoyed an entertaining evening, which consisted of a five-course meal, and dancing til the early hours to the sounds of local band Edison Lighthouse.

A fantastic evening was had by all, and the raffle raised £320 for Club funds.

Members of Newquay Towan Blystra Lions, as part of their dedication to the enviroment, helped out Newquay in Bloom in removing a number of rose bushes from the town’s Rose Garden.

The bushes are being replaced this year, and the old ones are being donated to the Newquay in Bloom organisation to help distribute in green spaces around the town.

Thank you very much to everyone that helped to support our Christmas Community Fun Day once again this year.

We took over Bank Street in Newquay, with Santa Claus, facepainting courtesy of Newquay Zoo, entertainment from Peninsula Radio, balloon animals, tombola, the Town-Crier David Bradshaw and of course our very own Dandy-Lion too!

Churches together, and members of the Newquay Male Voice Choir along with Newquay Town Band and Indian Queens Town Band did a fantastic job throughout the day, including a carol service on the Piazza too.

Our gratitude goes out to everyone that braved the elements, and worked so hard to make the day a success - raising lots of money for causes in the local communities of Newquay and the surrounding areas.

We all wish you a very Merry Christmas, and a happy and prosperous 2012!

Two local Newquay charities joined forces to help provide a Community Christmas Dinner for those who are unable to celebrate Christmas with family or others.

Over 100 people attended the event, which was part of the Mayor’s Charity efforts. Newquay Towan Blystra Lions worked with the Joe Way Appeal to host the meal, which took place on Friday 9 December at the Sandy Lodge Hotel, Newquay.

Barbara Hannan from Newquay Towan Blystra Lions explains; “The aim of the Dinner was to allow people who are unable to spend Christmas with family or others to get together and celebrate the occasion with others in a similar position.

The cost of the event was subsidised by the two charities. Members of the Lions Club helped wait-on the diners, and look after the guests.

This was then followed by mince pies with tea/coffee, professional entertainment and prize bingo hosted by Father Christmas.

“It was a fantastic event, enjoyed by all. We must add our heartfelt thanks for Peter, and everyone at the Sandy Lodge for being so accomodating and helping us to put this event together” added Barbara.

Newquay Towan Blystra Lions, and Santa had a fantastic evening at the St Newlyn East Christmas Lights Switchon, which took place on Thursday 8th December 2011.

Santa, in his sleigh led the procession through the village to the Church, where a short service was held.
